And like LeVar Burton said on Reading Rainbow, “you don’t have to take my word for it.” Each book in the trilogy won the Hugo Award for Fiction, making Jemisin the first African American writer to win in that category, the first writer to win three years in a row, and also the first writer to win for all three books in a trilogy. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy! The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky are all astounding, each of them a complete marvel. But often the third book fails to stick the landing, disappointing readers who invested in the first two books.īut, holy cats, that is not the case with N.K. But the second book often ends up just being filler-it just serves the purpose of moving the story toward its conclusion in the third book. With many, many series, the first book is amazing and has everyone clamoring for the second. GET STARTED WITH THE FIFTH SEASON SYNOPSIS ![]()

It’s remarkable, then, that Chris Weston’s introduction reveals that during his time as Lawrence’s assistant in the 1980s he never saw him resort to reference material. However, as Clemens mastered the art of piloting the steamboat, he felt that the river did not excite him anymore. By using the book, Clemens actually refers to the Mississippi river and all the lessons he had to learn as a steamboat pilot. Clemens acknowledges that it was useless for the uneducated (non-pilots) to understand the book because it was a dead language to them. He claims that it was not a book to be read once because every day it had a new story to tell. He states, “The face of the water, in time, became a wonderful book” (Clemens 237). He likens the whole experience as an interesting book. In August 1789, when the recently formed National Assembly wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Men and of the Citizen, comparable to the U.S.’ Declaration of Independence, its rights solely applied to men women did not enjoy the benefits of the French Revolution’s ideas of freedom, democracy, and natural rights. Despite their flaws, Marie Lu made me really care about these characters, and I didn’t realise quite how much until this final instalment of the series. There aren’t many straightforward heroes here, and I loved that. ![]() Many of the other characters are also complex. Seeing her darkness grow over the course of the series was a refreshing change from the typical hero arc. We see through the eyes of a character who has suffered a lot, been shunned by society, and who wants to make things better for people like her. What I love about this series is how we see the darker side of our protagonist – Adelina. And it was even better than its predecessors. The first two books in the Young Elites trilogy were dark and suspenseful, so the concluding chapter had a lot to live up to.
